How we review content
1. Sources
We rely first on primary, official sources: the Ontario Energy Board for electricity prices; Save on Energy (IESO) and Enbridge Gas for provincial programs; Natural Resources Canada for federal programs, EnerGuide and ENERGY STAR; and the ESA, TSSA and the Ontario Building Code for safety and code requirements. We use independent research and industry data for cost ranges and performance, and we say so.
We link to official sites so you can verify program details yourself.
2. Numbers and estimates
- Regulated prices and program amounts are stated exactly and attributed.
- Costs, savings and performance figures are presented as ranges with their assumptions, because every home is different.
- Calculators expose their inputs and method, and every default can be changed.
3. Review and updates
Every guide shows when it was last updated. We review rate tables when the Ontario Energy Board announces new prices (usually effective November 1), and review program pages whenever administrators announce changes — and at least twice a year.
Pages that depend on time-sensitive program details carry a reminder to confirm with the administrator.
4. Balance and independence
We explain trade-offs and say when an upgrade is unlikely to pay off. We do not name or rank specific contractors or manufacturers in our guides. Commercial partners have no input into content. Read how we're funded.
5. Plain language and accessibility
We write at an accessible reading level, define technical terms (see our glossary), use Canadian spelling and metric units, and follow our accessibility statement.
6. Corrections
If you find an error, please tell us. We review every report, correct confirmed errors promptly, and update the page's date. Significant corrections to facts or figures are noted on the page.
